Departing from neutrality, the Netherlands is an original signatory to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which comes into force on August 24, 1948. After 1967, there is a noticeable shift among Dutch political parties away from a politics of accomodation towards a more adversarial politics; nonetheless, politics in the Netherlands possess a significant degree of continuity.
