The second great German offensive takes place in the summer. The Stalingrad battle begins in August. The Germans and their allies use about 100 divisions in their attack along the southern half of the front. The deportation and massacre of Jews in the Ukraine, Transnistria, and the Crimean peninsula takes place. Between May and December, more than 140,000 Volhynia Jews are murdered. In August, more than 76,000 Jews from Eastern Galicia and 74,000 Jews from Western Galicia are deported to Belzec and killed (en-US)
