In spite of heroic Finnish defense, the USSR imposes its will on Finland in mid-March 1940. The Soviet Union obtains Bessarabia and part of Bukovina from Romania. The new Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic is formed from the territory acquired from Romania. On June 15, 1940, the Red Army occupies Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. (en-US)
