The Russian Empire from the start of World War I until the Bolshevik Revolution. Germany declares war on Russia on July 19 (August 1), 1914, and on Austria-Hungary on July 24 (August 6), 1914. On August 4 (17), 1914, the Russian army begins an advance on East Prussia, but retreats on August 13-17 (August 26-30), 1914. The German and Austrian armies advance during April-August, 1915. The Russian military displaces Jews from the front zone beginning on March 15, 1915. The Russian army advances in Galicia and Bukovina during May 22 (June 4) - July 31 (August 13), 1916.
On February 23-26 (March 8-11), 1917, demonstrations and riots in Petrograd take place. On March 2 (15), 1917, Nicholas II abdicates; the Provisional government is formed. On March 20 (April 2), 1917, Jews receive equality. On May 5 (18), 1917, the new Provisional government is formed. On August 19 (1), 1917, Germany advances into the Baltic region.
