Definition: On January 1, the Sterilization Law comes into effect, resulting in the sterilization of 320,000 persons -- mostly ethnic Germans -- prior to World War II. "The Night of the Long Knives" (the June 30 murder of the radical Nazi leadership) allows Hitler greater flexibility in pursuing economic and rearmament goals. After President Hindenburg dies on August 2, Hitler merges the offices of president and chancellor. (en-US)
