In Serbia, interned Jewish women and children are killed between March and May. In August, 5,000 Jews are deported from Croatia to Auschwitz. In Backa (now Hungary), raids during January 21-23 result in the mass slaughter of Jews of Novi Sad, but Hungarian politicians intervene to halt the onslaught. By June, Montenegro is ruled by an Italian-Chetnik alliance. By the end of August, Tito's partisans control most of western and central Bosnia. (en-US)
