Definizione

On July 25, King Vittorio Emanuele III orders the arrest of Mussolini, and a new government is formed by Marshal Piedro Badoglio. Italy surrenders on September 8. The King and Badoglio's government move to Brindisi, under Allied occupation. After being rescued by German soldiers, Mussolini establishes in November the Italian Social Republic in the northern and central areas still controlled by Germany. Trieste and Bolzano become part of a separate Nazi territory. Deportations to Auschwitz begin on September 16; on October 16, over 1,000 Jews were arrested in Rome and deported to Auschwitz. In the Social Republic, an armed struggle between Mussolini's forces and resistance groups breaks out. (en-US)
