Nota d'ambito

Used for general discussions of Hanukkah. Used in conjunction with the index term "customs and observances, Jewish" if the observance of the holiday is discussed. Used in conjunction with the keyword "sense of time: Jewish Holidays" if discussed as the date of an event that occurred while in the camp or while in hiding, (en-US)

Definizione

A holiday that commemorates the liberation of Judea from Assyrian Greek occupation and the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after its defilement. The Talmud records that a miracle occurred during this rededication: the menorah (candelabra) of the Temple was lit with enough sanctified oil to last one day, but remained lit for eight days. This event is commemorated by lighting candles of a Hannukiah (Hannukah candelabra) for eight days. (en-US)
