Definizione

Operation Market-Garden takes place in September 1944 as Allied forces parachute down into Arnhem, in eastern Holland. The Dutch government in exile demands that the Dutch railway system go on strike. The Germans retaliate by shutting off the supply of food through the canal system. Wide-spread starvation ensues in the provinces still completely held by the Germans, North Holland and South Holland, containing the major cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. In the spring of 1945, the Germans still control North Holland and South Holland provinces while the Allied forces make their way towards Germany through the northern and eastern part of the country. The Westerbork concentration camp is liberated on April 12. The Netherlands is fully liberated in May with the German unconditional surrender. (en-US)
