Definizione

Definition: The Treaty of Versailles (June 28, 1919) awards Eupen-Melmé to Belgium. The interwar period is politically unstable: there are 18 governments, and the "Flemish question" grows in importance. Belgium attempts to convince Jewish refugees from the Third Reich to use their country only as a transit point, and seeks to keep them from remaining in Belgium. Of the 66,000 Jews in Belgium in 1939, only 10 percent are Belgian citizens. (en-US)
