Austria participates in World War II as a part of Germany. Jews are allowed to emigrate from Austria until November 10, 1941 when the Nazi government bans Jewish emigration. Mass expulsions of Jews begin in October 1941. By November 1942, only 7,000 Jews, most of who are married to non-Jews, remain in Austria. Deportations continue and the Jewish community virtually disappears. At the end of the war only about 1,000 Jews survive in Vienna. Tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews are deported to Austria in the second half of 1944 to work in forced labor camps. In the end, more than 65,000 Austrian Jews die in the ghettos and concentrations camps. Only 1,747 Jews return from the camps. By April 13, 1945, Soviet forces occupy Vienna and proceed to violently loot and destroy the city. Austria surrenders to the Western Allies. By the end of World War II, over 21,000 Austrian homes are destroyed, 247,000 members of Austria's armed forces are dead or missing, and 29,000 Austrian civilians are dead. (en-US)
