On May 10, 1944, the Hungarian authorities ghettoized the Jews of Balassagyarmat, forcing them to move into an area containing 100 houses and approximately 300 rooms. The ghetto was guarded first by local police and later by gendarmes. The ghetto was evacuated at the end of May 1944 to Nyires, approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) out of town. Men up to the age of 48 were conscripted into forced labor battalions, leaving only women, the aged, and children in the ghetto. On June 10, 1944, approximately 2,100 Jews from the ghetto were entrained and deported to Auschwitz. The great synagogue and the rest of the community buildings in Balassagyarmat were demolished by the German army. A total of 182 survivors returned to Balassagyarmat after the war. (en-US)
