Definizione

Jewish nationalist movement whose goal is the existence of a Jewish state in Palestine. The first Zionist Congress was held in 1897 in Basel, Switzerland, and was convened by Theodore Herzl. This Congress put forth the basic goal of the Zionist movement, to establish a Jewish state in Palestine. Pogroms in Russia spurred immigration to Palestine early in the twentieth century. With World War I, new leadership emerged in the Zionist movement under Chaim Weizmann. The Zionists obtained the Balfour Declaration from Britain in 1917, which stated Britain's support for a Jewish Homeland in Palestine. The Holocaust provided further impetus to the Zionist cause. The end of World War II saw massive immigration of Jewish refugees to Palestine. Zionism saw its dream realized on May 14, 1948, when the United Nations established the State of Israel. (en-US)
