History:
An independent entity for almost 2,000 years, modern Ethiopia established itself in the mid-nineteenth century. Italy invaded Ethiopia in October 1935. Along with Eritrea and Somaliland, it became Italian East Africa and was liberated by the Allies in 1941. The Ethiopian Jewish community lived in the city of Gondar before their immigration to Israel in the 1980s and 1990s. Eritrea split off from from Ethiopia and became an independent nation in 1993.
