Lower Austria is an autonomous province in northeast Austria. It is bordered by the Czech Republic to the north and Slovakia to the east and by the Austrian provinces of Burgenland to the southeast, Styria to the south, and Upper Austria to the west. The capital of Lower Austria during World War II was Vienna. As of 2000 the capital is Saint P"lten (Sankt P"lten). In 1945 Lower Austria was in the Soviet occupation zone. (en-US)
